Aluminum Base Plate Ensures Uniform Microplate Temperature Control

Drug developers and other researchers who need to perform high throughput studies involving volatile solvents or that require uniform control of sample temperature will be interested in a newly patented line of aluminum and glass microplates.

G. Finneran (Vineland, NJ, USA) 96-well Aluminum Microplate System was developed for use with volatile solvents and for testing that requires uniform heating and cooling of samples. Protocols involving high throughput solubility testing, salt screening, and freeze-drying are accomplished more effectively with this system than with plastic microplates.

The system is available with either a solid aluminum base plate or one that is vented. The system adheres to the standard eight by 12 (96-well) footprint with a stamped alpha-numeric ID grid. A choice of glass conical and flat bottom vials in four sizes: 0.5 mL, 1.0 mL, 1.5 mL, and 2.0 mL is available. An aluminum cover can be screwed into place, locking vials into the base plate.

Immersion of the vented base plate in liquids allows total fluid contact with the vials, and the aluminum composition of the base plate promotes more efficient heat transfer. The base plate is composed of reusable anodized aluminum that prevents finger print smudges and guarantees an extended lifetime.

“We have learned that medicinal chemists have been looking for a reusable product that offers excellent heat transfer for their solubility and salt selection studies,” said Janet Cohen, international sales and marketing manager at J.G. Finneran. “For example, an estimated 50% of all drug molecules are administered as salts, so we believe this product will be adopted in many drug development assays.”
