Saliva Test Detects Implant-Related Microbial Risks

Infection is the most frequent and preventable cause of dental implant failure, with microbial organisms contributing to inflammation, tissue degradation, and systemic immune response—often without visible early symptoms. More...

These implant-related complications can arise from pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, and others that evade early detection. Quick and accurate identification of these microbial threats remains a clinical challenge. Now, a new diagnostic test addresses this gap by offering a fast, noninvasive method to detect high-risk pathogens before implant failure occurs.

The SimplyTest Oral Health-IMPLANT test, developed by Spectrum Health Science (Huntsville, AL, USA), is a molecular assay designed to detect microbial species linked to peri-implant disease and implant failure. Sold under the SimplyTest brand, the test extends the company’s oral health diagnostic platform, which also includes screening tools for periodontal conditions. It is designed for both chairside and at-home saliva sample collection, using a proprietary preservation and analysis system. After the sample reaches the lab, results are delivered within 24 to 48 hours through a secure clinical portal. The report includes pathogen-specific data to support diagnostic conversations and personalized treatment planning. The solution identifies eight high-risk microbial species, including both bacteria and fungi, known to contribute to implant complications. This test aims to assist clinicians in preventive implant care, surgical planning, and cost-efficient treatment.

SimplyTest’s next-generation salivary diagnostics have been engineered to deliver fast screenings that detect microbial risks earlier, personalize care, and link oral health to systemic conditions. The broader SimplyTest Oral Health platform promotes a data-driven model of dentistry where early insight enables timely interventions and improved patient outcomes. The IMPLANT test enhances this effort by expanding diagnostic capabilities to a critical area of dental care. The company plans to continue leveraging this platform for further innovations that elevate clinical standards and reduce avoidable complications in oral healthcare.

“The SimplyTest Oral Health line is part of a broader effort to redefine the standard of care in dentistry and systemic healthcare by empowering providers with tools that reveal the root causes of oral and systemic conditions,” said Justin Hunt, CEO of Spectrum Health Science. “The IMPLANT test expands our platform’s reach to support preventative implant care, surgical planning, and cost-efficient treatment, which are key concerns for both clinicians and care organizations. It’s a strong example of how SimplyTest equips providers with timely insights that improve patient outcomes and help reduce avoidable expenses.”
