ADLM 2026 Unites Laboratory Experts Around Emerging Diagnostic Technologies

The Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) brought together nearly 17,000 laboratory professionals for its 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo, held July 26–30 in Anaheim, California. More...

Across five days, the event highlighted advances in diagnostic research and technology addressing diabetes, space medicine, neurodegenerative disease, cancer screening, laboratory automation, and other areas of healthcare.

The scientific program featured plenary presentations from experts working across clinical research and laboratory medicine. Opening speaker Dr. David M. Nathan, recipient of the 2026 Wallace H. Coulter Lectureship Award, reflected on five decades of diabetes research and emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration and federal support.

On Monday, Dr. Kathleen McMonigal of the NASA Johnson Space Center Clinical Laboratory examined how changes in gravity affect human physiology and discussed laboratory strategies for monitoring astronaut health during future lunar and deep-space missions. The following day, Dr. Elizabeth Head of the University of California, Irvine, presented research into interventions that could delay or prevent Alzheimer’s disease among people with Down syndrome, who face a heightened risk of developing the condition.

Other plenary sessions focused on advances in cancer diagnosis and prevention. On Wednesday, Dr. Leeya Pinder of the University of Cincinnati discussed developments in cervical cancer screening and their potential to improve healthcare equity. Closing speaker Dr. Arun Wiita of the University of California, San Francisco, described how mass spectrometry is being used to identify improved biomarkers and treatment strategies for blood cancers.

Innovation also took center stage through the ADLM Disruptive Technology Award competition, where emerging companies presented diagnostic technologies intended to improve access to accurate testing. Kompass Diagnostics received the 2026 award for IDA, its rapid multimodal electrical transduction platform.

The Clinical Lab Expo featured 700 exhibitors across 308,611 net square feet of show space. Companies displayed technologies spanning artificial intelligence, clinical microbiology, molecular diagnostics, laboratory automation, point-of-care testing, mass spectrometry, and other areas of laboratory medicine.

Through its scientific sessions, product demonstrations, and industry presentations, ADLM 2026 underscored the central role of clinical laboratories in disease detection, patient management, public health, and healthcare innovation. 

“This year’s meeting brought together clinical laboratory medicine experts from all over the world, highlighting our field’s vital — and expanding — role in driving healthcare forward,” said ADLM CEO Melanie J. Wells.

“From designing sophisticated diagnostics for space travelers to mobile testing solutions that widen access to healthcare here on Earth — and conducting a diverse array of research addressing major global health challenges like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and cancer — clinical labs are the incubators for some of the greatest minds in medicine today. I hope that every attendee of ADLM 2026 feels the same sense of pride I do from witnessing firsthand our mighty collective impact,” Wells said.

The organization’s next annual meeting, ADLM 2027 will be held in Chicago from July 25-29, 2027.
