LIMS Market Expanding in Eastern Europe

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 10 Mar 2006
Companies in Eastern Europe are increasingly implementing laboratory-information-management systems (LIMS) to make the most of available laboratory resources and enhance productivity as well as efficiency, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan (Palo Alto, CA, USA), an international consulting firm. As a result, market revenues are expected to increase at a compound annual growth of 8.4%.

The LIMS market offers many opportunities for vendors who can achieve strong product differentiation for new laboratory experimental requirements. Thus, vendors are providing interactive, customer-friendly features that enhance sample traceability, instrument interfacing, and final report generation in a formatted manner.

Foreign investment in the pharmaceutical industry has been increasing in many countries of Eastern Europe such as Poland, the Czech Republic, and Russia. Since many of these companies have business operations at multiple sites, they will have to comply with certain regulatory measures such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025 and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). A research analyst with Frost & Sullivan has noted that LIMS vendors will have to provide quality control software packages with more robustness to meet the changing demands of the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmaceutical companies that consider purchasing LIMS will access their needs very carefully before making such a large investment. With legacy systems already in place, many companies might not feel a need to replace these systems with modern second-generation configurable solutions. Companies are concerned about migration of data from legacy systems to second-generation LIMS, and expect to be able to transfer data from old systems to new systems.

With Eastern Europe providing a cost-friendly business environment, LIMS vendors need to streamline operations and offer superior local customer support. They will also need to provide multilingual support systems that suit the demands of the respective countries in this region.
