High-Throughput Product Technologies Focus on Flexibility and Efficiency

By Labmedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Feb 2008
Several high-throughput product technologies and a new consultative approach to optimizing laboratory automation that focus on improving labs' application flexibility, efficiency, and robustness have been launched. More...
The new products include a multiplate reader, high-throughput microplates, and monochromator and cellular screening platforms.

Filter-based and monochromator-based platforms have been integrated into the established EnVision microplate-reader product line. The dual-system platform enables scientists to choose their high-throughput detection method, and provides faster assay turnaround. The new monochromator option is available in two formats: the Absorbance Monochromator measures absorbance assays with a single monochromator, while the Fluorescence Intensity Monochromator measures absorbance and fluorescence intensity with a high performance quad monochromator package. The monochromator option is part of a highly flexible instrument system. It can be combined with other EnVision options, including the time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) laser; can easily be integrated into robotic systems; and can accept microplates with up to 3,456 wells.

The new LumiLux cellular screening (CS) platform is an ultra-high throughput cellular imaging platform for both kinetic flash and glow luminescence assays with advanced liquid handling functionality. An instrument with walk-away capability, it provides sensitive detection using patented fiberoptic imaging technology, state-of-the-art liquid handling, and sophisticated data analysis tools. In addition LumiLux introduces a unique cell stirrer that permits the use of both suspension and adherent cells in ultra (u)HTS screens.

The new platform has a compact design that preserves the performance and sensitivity of the current LumiLux platform. It has a much smaller footprint that meets the increased demand of high-throughput screening (HTS) labs, switching lower throughput applications or integration into new or existing robotic platforms for HTS. The LumiLux platforms enable simultaneous 1,536 "inject and read” flash luminescence assays, allowing laboratories to produce over 200,000 data points per day. It is particularly well suited for uHTS calcium screening

PerkinElmer (Waltham, MA, USA) introduced the new instrumentation as well as an enhanced consultation approach at LabAutomation 2008, which took place from January 27-30, 2008, at Palm Springs (CA, USA). PerkinElmer Inc.'s Life and Analytical Sciences business unit provides fully integrated solutions such as diagnostic and detection instruments, reagents, and software.
