A new in vitro diagnostics (IVD) CE-marked kit for real-time PCR based detection of the Zaire Ebolavirus, the strain responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa, has recently been released.

The new assay, “FTD Ebola,” is from Fast-Track Diagnostics (Luxembourg), a leader in the design, development, and manufacture of infectious disease detection kits. FDT Ebola is based on an easy-to-use one-tube mastermix for multiplex real-time PCR with internal control, so clinicians can deliver fast, highly accurate diagnoses leading to greater efficiency in the treatment of patients.

“Supporting infectious disease detection in the developing world has always been a priority for Fast-Track Diagnostics,”said Dr. William Carman, CEO of Fast-Track Diagnostics, “We offer substantial discounts to these countries, as well as to anyone involved in relevant research projects. Therefore we are delighted to expand our extensive portfolio with this new addition.” Fast-Track Diagnostics includes a commitment to research and diagnostic laboratories in the developing world and its kits are used by the GABRIEL network for projects funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Fast-Track Diagnostics has one of the broadest ranges available for single and multiplex PCR kits for infectious diseases. Its assays are validated on clinical samples. Kits are available for over 100 different pathogens— including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites—many in multiplex syndrome panel format for commonly faced conditions, including respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, meningitis, and infections of the immunosuppressed. Assays are compatible with many standard laboratory real-time PCR cyclers and extraction methods, and are in routine daily use in over 100 laboratories worldwide.

The Ebola PCR kit from Fast-Track Diagnostics is currently not US FDA approved.
