Rapid Tests Detect and Differentiate Between Common Malarias

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 08 Jul 2009
Two new rapid tests offer a rapid diagnostic solution for in vitro detection of malarial antigens in whole blood.

The rapid test range is suitable for the harsh conditions of malaria endemic regions and enables highly targeted, controlled treatment through early identification. More...
Both tests detect antigens from capillary or venous whole blood and provide easy to interpret results in 15 minutes.

Introduced by Inverness Medical (Bedford, UK), the Clearview malaria tests are simple and easy to use. Clearview malaria P.f. is a qualitative test for detecting the most common, virulent, and deadly malaria-causing parasite, Plasmodium falciparum; Clearview malaria Combo detects and differentiates between P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, and P. ovale antigens.

Malaria is a parasitic disease spread by the female Anopheles mosquito, and causes severe flu-like symptoms. Each year there are an estimated 1-2 million deaths attributed to malaria. Morbidity, mortality, and transmission will be greatly reduced if the infection is accurately diagnosed and effectively treated.

The Clearview diagnostic tests are important in the Roll Back Malaria Partnership's Global Malaria Action Plan, enabling the rapid spread of antimalarial drug resistance to be minimized, as treatment can be highly targeted and controlled.
