Open-Source Consortium Aims to Standardize Digital Pathology Workflows

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 11 Jun 2026

Digital pathology is expanding rapidly as laboratories adopt whole-slide imaging and computational tools to meet growing diagnostic and biomarker-testing demand. More...

However, fragmented software infrastructure and limited interoperability can hinder standardization and lead to uneven algorithm deployment across sites. Open, clinically robust platforms are needed to unify viewing, case management, and artificial intelligence workflows. A new open-source initiative now provides a clinical-grade platform and collaborative framework to advance standardization across institutions.

Tempus AI (Chicago, IL, USA), Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH; New Haven, CT, USA), and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK; New York, NY, USA) have launched the digital pathology IMS Open-Source Consortium (IMS Consortium). YNHH and MSK are the founding academic members and will help define the consortium’s vision, governance, and strategic direction. The effort is designed to accelerate democratization and standardization by convening leading academic medical centers and industry partners to develop a best-in-class open-source platform and viewer.

To seed the ecosystem, Tempus will open source the existing Paige Image Management System (IMS), including its FullFocus slide viewer, FullFolio case management solution, and artificial intelligence (AI) orchestration and integration modules. The package is intended to provide a clinical-grade baseline solution that institutions worldwide can adopt and extend. The consortium’s scope centers on interoperable software that supports digital slide viewing and case handling while enabling integration and deployment of AI tools within routine workflows.

Membership in the IMS Consortium is expected to expand over time, and the group will operate independently of Tempus’ current digital pathology commercial offering. The collaboration is positioned to provide shared standards and an open framework that participating centers can refine collectively. Tempus is an MSK licensing partner and also provides research funding to MSK for certain activities.

“Digital pathology is transforming how we deliver diagnostics, advance translational research, and integrate AI into clinical care. We are excited to join the Tempus IMS Consortium as a founding member and collaborate with leading academic and industry partners to help build an open, scalable, and interoperable digital pathology ecosystem. Open innovation and shared standards will be essential to accelerating adoption, improving workflow efficiency, and enhancing patient care.” said Chen Liu, MD, PhD, Chief of Pathology, Yale New Haven Hospital.
