Novel System Enables Lightning Fast Transport of Clinical Samples

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 10 Aug 2023

Time plays a major role in the effective transportation of clinical samples. Traditional methods of transporting these samples, like blood, urine, and swabs, from departments to labs often prove unpredictable with high variation. Now, an innovative system with one-touch enables lightning-fast transport of small clinical samples. With blood samples comprising about 75% of the items dispatched through traditional tube systems, the novel system significantly reduces the strain on existing pneumatic tube systems.

Sarstedt (Nümbrecht, Germany) has developed the Tempus600 system to increase the efficiency of sample transportation. The system facilitates one-touch handling and point-to-point delivery, leading to a significant reduction in the total turnaround time (ToTAT) from when the test is ordered to reporting the analysis result to the concerned clinician. In addition to supporting the transition to increased ambulatory treatments in hospitals and clinics, Tempus600 also aids in the efficient treatment and quicker discharge of hospitalized patients.

The Tempus600 system features a dedicated point-to-point line of 25 mm tubes without any cross points in the system, thus eliminating the risk of samples getting blocked. Samples arrive seamlessly from the ward to the lab in mere seconds without the hassles of packing, unpacking, delays, or mix-ups. Boasting an hourly capacity of up to 1250 samples, it significantly eases the pressure on existing transport systems and frees up capacity for transporting materials in addition to small clinical samples. The Tempus600 system can be installed in a hospital or building in two weeks without causing any disruptions to a hospital’s daily operations.

With the Tempus600, hospital staff is no longer burdened with hand-delivering samples or relying on traditional systems, allowing them to channel their valuable skills where they are most needed. Nurses can dedicate more time to patient care, while lab technicians can focus on collecting and examining samples. The outcome is improved results and faster, superior treatment. With the fast and dedicated pipeline offered by Tempus600, labs function optimally, eliminating the need for remote laboratories. This improved efficiency translates to faster analyses, better patient care, and a significant reduction in bed days.
