Hybrid Pipette Combines Manual Control with Fast Electronic Aliquoting

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 22 Sep 2025

Manual pipettes offer the control needed for delicate tasks such as mixing or supernatant removal, but typically fall short in repetitive workflows like aliquoting. More...

Electronic pipettes solve this problem with programmable repeat dispensing functions, but often involve complex set-up, shared usage, and a less intuitive user experience. Now, a new hybrid pipette eliminates the need to compromise between pipetting control and speed, enabling a smooth shift between manual liquid handling and electronic repeat dispensing using a single ergonomic device.

INTEGRA Biosciences (Zizers, Switzerland) has launched its new SWITCH hybrid pipette that solves pipetting challenges by combining the familiar feel of a manual pipette with the aliquoting speed and efficiency of an electronic device, all without changing how users work. The SWITCH hybrid pipette can be operated manually for a familiar handheld pipetting experience, or switched to repeat dispense mode for efficient electronic aliquoting.

The innovative hybrid pipette features a thumb-operated plunger that stays at the same height across all volume settings - eliminating excessive thumb stretching - and lowers further in repeat dispense mode for effortless, button-like operation. This ergonomic design reduces strain while enhancing comfort, control, and precision. A quick set ring allows one-handed volume adjustments, and an easy-to-read display shows the volume aspirated in real time.

The SWITCH uses GRIPTIPS pipette tips for secure, strain-free tip loading and ejection, and includes USB-C charging - even while in use - to ensure all-day operation. The SWITCH is also compatible with the Flex charging stand, which can securely hold and charge up to 6 SWITCH pipettes simultaneously - keeping them upright and organized - and is available in rotary and linear formats to suit any workspace. The SWITCH is a tool for the future that simplifies complex workflows, reduces hand strain, and fits seamlessly into existing lab practices.
