Химики из Университета Джорджии (University of Georgia; Афины, штат Джорджия, США) и их сотрудники разработали устройство размером с USB-накопитель, которое работает, направляя кровь по каналам, чей диаметр меньше человеческого волоса. Чтобы подготовить кровь для анализа, команда добавляет в образцы магнитные микроносители микронного размера. Лейкоциты в образце прикрепляются к этим микроносителям. Когда кровь проходит через устройство, магниты в верхней и нижней части чипа притягивают лейкоциты и их магнитные микроносители вниз по определенному каналу, в то время как циркулирующие опухолевые клетки продолжают двигаться в другой канал.

Новый метод, основанный на контрасте намагниченности клеток в биосовместимых феррожидкостях (коллоидная магнитная суспензия наночастиц), называемый интегрированным феррогидродинамическим разделением клеток (ИФРК), который обогащает ЦОК независимым от опухолевого антигена способом и включающим изменение размера клеток, достигает высокой пропускной способности (12 мл в час), имеет высокую скорость извлечения (99,08% при соотношении вплоть до 10 клеток на миллилитр), низкий уровень контаминации лейкоцитами (533 клетки на каждый обработанный миллилитр крови) и является биосовместимым.

Соавтор исследования Мелисса Б. Дэвис (Melissa B. Davis), ассистент-профессор, доктор философии, сказала: "Врачи могут лечить то, что можно обнаружить. Мы часто не в состоянии выявить определенные подтипы ЦОК, но с помощью устройства ИФРК можно собрать все подтипы ЦОК и даже определить, какие подтипы являются наиболее информативными в отношении рецидива и прогрессирования заболевания".
