Handheld Decapping Instrument to Aid Biotech Researchers

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 13 Jul 2010
Often small, clever instruments for routine laboratory use aid biotech investigators to work with greater efficiency.

One such instrument is the Thermo Scientific (Milford, MA, USA) Eight-Channel Handheld Decapper. More...
This little machine was designed to decap ergonomically and efficiently eight screw caps at once to allow access to specimens that are to be sampled with multichannel or single channel pipettes. The instrument conveniently works with tubes held in a 96-well microplate format.

Since it was made to remove and replace screw caps with precision and ease, the Decapper eliminates a time consuming, labor-intensive task while reducing the risk of repetitive strain injury.

The instrument uncaps a column of eight screw-top tubes in just four seconds, shortening the time required to access samples, and hastening their return to storage. The caps are tightened uniformly and at the optimal torque to prevent spills or leakage is applied to maintain sample integrity, and to avoid sample loss during cryogenic storage and freeze-thaw cycles.
