Triple Gas Incubators Improve Performance of IVF Laboratories

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 18 Mar 2010
A new generation triple gas incubator, available in two sizes, meets the most demanding requirements of the modern in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory.

Research has shown that incubators with an atmosphere comprising CO2, O2, and N2 provide a more natural environment than a plain CO2 incubator, giving better embryo quality and higher success rate. More...

For this purpose, a new triple gas incubator is now being marketed by IKS International (Rosmalen, The Netherlands). The new incubator is available in both large (173-liter chamber) and small (33-liter chamber) sizes. Both sizes offer a high quality-culturing environment with excellent temperature accuracy and CO2 stability.

The larger incubator features eight divided inner doors, while the smaller model has six divided inner doors. Both sizes contain a condensation-free, fully autoclavable chamber with rounded corners for easy cleaning. Very fast recovery times for temperature, CO2 and O2 ensure a highly stable environment for embryo growth, and an internal high efficiency particulate absorbing (HEPA) filter prevents contamination. Other features include a dual-beam (nondispersive) infrared CO2 sensor and an access port allowing connection to an external sensor.

Han Weerdesteyn, incubator product manager at IKS, said, "Many IVF laboratories have moved to using lowered O2 concentrations to improve the viability of the growing embryos. IKS triple-gas (CO2 /O2) incubators fit very well with the needs of these laboratories, being able to control both the CO2 and O2 level of the incubator. These very stable and affordable, condensation-free incubators provide the best possible environment for growing embryos.”
