FFPE RNA Purification Kit

By Biotechdaily staff writers
Posted on 19 May 2008
New formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) RNA purification kits will allow users to extract high quality RNA and DNA from FFPE archival samples for several downstream applications including quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), RT-PCR, microarray expression profiling, and mutation screening. Norgen Biotek Corp. (Thorold, ON, Canada), a biotechnology company focusing primarily on advancing tools for RNA, DNA, and protein purifications, announced the expansion of its RNA product range by launching the FFPE RNA purification kit. Moreover, Norgen is also offering a kit that recovers both RNA/DNA from FFPE archival samples, the FFPE RNA/DNA purification kit.

A key feature of Norgen's FFPE extraction kits is that they isolate both small and large RNA sequences from the sample. Other commercially available kits use high concentrations of ethanol, which favor the extraction of small RNA sequences and result in poor yields of larger RNA, although the large RNA sequences in the FFPE samples may not be too badly degraded and could be used for some downstream applications. With Norgen's kit, no assumptions are made about the quality of large RNA that may be present in the sample, and therefore, both the small RNA and the large RNA sequences will be recovered.

"The FFPE purification kits are an excellent addition to our already successful line of RNA purification, concentration and clean-up kits,” said Dr. Haj-Ahmad, president and CEO of Norgen Biotek. "We offer competitive products of the highest quality for all areas of RNA research, including total RNA extraction, microRNA enrichment, and the 3-in-1 purification of RNA/DNA/proteins. This latest addition of FFPE RNA and DNA extraction kits solidifies our position as an innovative company in the RNA purification market segment.”

Norgen was recently recognized as one of Canada's Top 10 life-science companies. Norgen specializes in the research, development, manufacture, and marketing of a variety of commercial sample preparation products derived from its proprietary technology. Currently, this technology is used in protein, RNA and DNA purification, isolation, and concentration and clean-up kits. Norgen is actively working on the adoption of this enabling technology into the diagnostic market as well as industrial-scale applications.
