Hospital Partnership Advances Clinical Validation of Portable Diagnostic Technology

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 15 Oct 2026

Point-of-care diagnostics can help hospitals obtain results closer to the patient, but many rapid tests provide only limited qualitative information. More...

Central laboratory testing offers more precise analysis, although results may not be available until after the patient has left the care setting. This gap can complicate bedside decision-making, workflow efficiency, and clinical research in intended-use environments. To address these limitations, a new clinical validation collaborationin is evaluating portable diagnostic technologies in hospital settings.

The five-year framework brings together PurMinds Enterprises (Toronto, Canada), SpectroChip (Hsinchu County, Taiwan), and Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital (Kaohsiung, Taiwan), which is operated by Kaohsiung Medical University. The parties intend to establish the PurMinds / SpectroChip Global Clinical Validation Testing Center for teaching, research, and clinical validation activities. The framework is intended to support diagnostic performance evaluation, testing workflow assessment, and point-of-care performance research, subject to institutional review board review, institutional approvals, and regulatory requirements.

The collaboration centers on the SwiftLab Platform and SpectroChip’s photonic chip-based portable testing technology. SwiftLab uses a full-spectrum, laboratory-grade spectrometer miniaturized onto a photonic chip and housed inside the portable SpectroCision SPU-D100 reader. The platform is designed to convert a low-cost lateral-flow cassette from a qualitative line-based test into a quantitative result in five minutes or less at sites such as clinics, pharmacies, community health centers, and the patient bedside.

Under the framework, PurMinds will lead precision-medicine applications, clinical research collaboration, and access to international research and industry resources. SpectroChip will provide the photonic chip-based testing technology, technical documentation, training, and related support. Siaogang Hospital will provide an institutional setting for approved teaching, research, clinical validation, research design, performance evaluation, workflow assessment, and talent development.

“This collaboration brings together SpectroChip's cutting-edge photonic chip technology, Siaogang Hospital's clinical research environment and PurMinds' precision-medicine platform and commercialization strategy. Given the full-spectrum spectrometry embedded in our platform and its potential to develop an extended catalog of testing items, our vision is to connect with clinically relevant testing applications and the research needed to evaluate them,” said Janet Qi, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PurMinds.

“Collaboration between healthcare institutions, technology developers, and market integrators is important to the responsible evaluation of emerging diagnostic technologies. We look forward to supporting appropriate teaching and research activities, evaluating diagnostic performance under approved study protocols, and contributing clinical perspectives to the development of point-of-care testing. All research activities will be conducted in accordance with applicable ethical, institutional, and regulatory requirements,” said Chih-Hsing Hung, MD, PhD, Dean of Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital.
