A new solution for storing, viewing, and sharing digital pathology images between pathologists and radiologists has been launched at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS 2015; Chicago, IL, USA) conference.

Cancer diagnosis and the effectiveness of treatments and patient outcomes are dependent on findings from both pathology and radiology departments. More...
Until now, information exchange between radiology and pathology groups was limited because of the major difference in their departmental workflows.

The solution was developed by Sectra (Linköping, Sweden), an international medical imaging IT provider that develops and sells medical IT and secure communication products and services.

The solution is intended to improve the efficiency of cancer care by allowing pathologists to review cases digitally, instead of by microscope. The solution will enable sharing of samples between pathologists and specialists, for a faster and more accurate diagnosis, and will also facilitate multi-disciplinary team meetings.

Marie Ekström, president of Sectra Imaging IT Solutions, said, “Many pathology departments stand on the threshold of adopting digital pathology to benefit from major health and financial gains and quality improvements throughout the cancer care chain. With 20 years’ experience in the medical IT field and having been a pioneer in the digitization of radiology, Sectra can help pathology departments fully utilize the benefits of digitization.”
