New Multipurpose Centrifuge Combines High Capacity with Sustainable Cooling

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 09 Sep 2026

Laboratories often need centrifugation that accommodates multiple vessel formats while maintaining controlled temperatures to protect sensitive samples. More...

Intuitive controls and repeatable operation can streamline daily workflows across diverse applications. A new system has launched that offers a refrigerated, multipurpose benchtop platform to support many workflows in one instrument.

Eppendorf (Hamburg, Germany) has introduced the Centrifuge 5811 R, a refrigerated, multipurpose benchtop centrifuge that succeeds the Centrifuge 5810 R. The 5811 R retains the performance and versatility of its predecessor while adding a new design, a refreshed user interface, and updated sustainable cooling technology. It is presented as a single centrifuge solution intended to support parallel workflows within a compact footprint.

The Centrifuge 5811 R uses R290 propane refrigerant, which the company reports has a global warming potential of 0.02 and an ozone depletion potential of 0. Energy-focused features, including ECO shut-off, energy-efficient FastTemp, and aerodynamic bucket designs, help reduce power use. The instrument offers a capacity of up to 3 L and reaches up to 20,913 × g (14,000 rpm), while a portfolio of 15 rotors and broad adapter selection supports tubes, bottles, and plates.

Swing-bucket and fixed-angle options, mixed bucket loading in a single run, and refrigerated operation from −9 °C to +40 °C support a wide range of temperature-sensitive workflows. For routine use, the system includes an intuitive control panel with storage for up to 35 user programs, low access height, a Soft Touch Lid, QuickLock rotor lids and caps, and quiet operation.

Applications for the 5811 R include harvesting and processing of cells, bacteria, yeast, algae, and other microorganisms, as well as nucleic acid and protein purification and peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation. The system is compatible with 16 of the 17 existing Centrifuge 5810 R rotors, allowing laboratories to preserve most prior rotor investments during transition. Different bundles are available to support varied laboratory requirements.

“The refrigerated Centrifuge 5811 R is a benchtop system for labs where a single centrifuge needs to support many workflows in parallel. Tubes in the morning, plates in the afternoon, bottles for the next experiment – the Centrifuge 5811 R brings this capacity together in one reliable instrument. It combines broad rotor flexibility, high capacity, and sustainable cooling technology in a compact footprint that fits into virtually any lab,” said Dr. Tim Schommarzt, Global Marketing Manager, Eppendorf Group.
