Expanding Screening and Biomarker Testing Drive Cancer Diagnostics Market Growth

By LabMedica International staff writers

Cancer diagnostics encompasses imaging, tissue pathology, laboratory testing, and molecular technologies used to detect, confirm, characterize, and monitor cancer. More...

The global cancer diagnostics market is projected to grow from USD 29.3 billion in 2026 to USD 41.5 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2%. These are the latest findings of Wissen Research (Sheridan, WY, USA), a market research and consulting firm.

Market growth is being driven by the rising global cancer burden, expanding screening programs, and increasing demand for earlier and more accurate disease detection. Approximately 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer deaths were recorded worldwide in 2022, while annual new cases are expected to exceed 35 million by 2050. This growing burden is increasing demand for screening, diagnosis, staging, molecular characterization, treatment selection, and disease monitoring.

Cancer diagnosis is also evolving from a process centered primarily on medical imaging and microscopic tissue examination into a layered approach incorporating molecular and genomic testing, liquid biopsy, digital pathology, and artificial intelligence (AI). Next-generation sequencing-based comprehensive genomic profiling enables laboratories to evaluate multiple biomarkers from a single sample, while companion diagnostics help identify patients most likely to benefit from specific targeted therapies.

Liquid biopsy is gaining importance because it can detect tumor cells or tumor-derived DNA in blood and other body fluids without requiring repeated tissue biopsies. These tests can support diagnosis, treatment selection, response monitoring, and detection of recurrence. However, tissue-based diagnostics remain essential, as liquid biopsy and multi-cancer detection tests continue to face challenges involving sensitivity, specificity, clinical validation, and demonstrated utility in improving patient outcomes.

Based on product type, in vitro diagnostic testing held the largest share of the cancer diagnostics market in 2025. This category includes kits and reagents, PCR and next-generation sequencing instruments, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, immunoassays, and flow cytometry. Its leading position reflects the extensive use of laboratory testing for confirming malignancy, evaluating biomarkers, characterizing tumors, and guiding treatment decisions.

By application, diagnosis and disease characterization accounted for the largest market share in 2025. Molecular and genomic tests can identify mutations, gene fusions, biomarker expression, microsatellite instability, and mismatch repair status, providing information that supports tumor classification and therapy selection. At the same time, AI-enabled imaging and digital pathology systems are being developed to assist with lesion detection, classification, workflow automation, and analysis of increasingly complex diagnostic data.

The market has also seen continued investment in pathology, imaging, and AI-enabled diagnostic workflows. In September 2026, Danaher subsidiary Leica Biosystems completed its acquisition of StatLab Medical Products, expanding its anatomic pathology capabilities across specimen collection, preparation, staining, digital imaging, and AI-assisted diagnosis. Siemens Healthineers and Vanderbilt Health entered a USD 87 million partnership in July 2026 to modernize diagnostic imaging and radiation oncology, while Roche agreed in May 2026 to acquire PathAI for up to USD 1.05 billion to strengthen its digital pathology and AI capabilities.

Geographically, North America held the largest share of the cancer diagnostics market in 2025, supported by established screening programs, advanced healthcare infrastructure, sophisticated imaging and laboratory technologies, precision oncology programs, and high healthcare expenditure. Asia Pacific is expected to register the fastest growth as the region’s cancer burden increases and investment expands in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, screening programs, molecular testing, digital diagnostics, and advanced imaging.
