RSV Detection System Has High Sensitivity and Specificity

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 08 Oct 2012
A system for rapid detection of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has higher sensitivity and specificity than viral cell culture methods, and provides an objective test result in only 10 minutes.

The Veritor system eliminates the subjective result interpretation of visually read assays and provides reliable, objective results on a hand held reader with an easy-to-read digital display. More...
It utilizes advanced particle and adaptive read technologies coupled with a special hand-held analyzer. The advanced particle technology and improved chemistries helps improve the sensitivity of the test. The adaptive read technology helps reduce false-positive results by examining and compensating for many of the effects of nonspecific binding thus improving specificity.

BD Diagnostics, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Co. Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) a global medical technology company, received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA; Silver Spring, MD, USA) for nasopharyngeal wash, aspirate, and swab in transport media specimens on the BD Veritor system for rapid detection of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The new product is cleared for use in clinical settings.

The BD Veritor system for rapid detection of RSV joins the previously FDA-cleared and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-waived BD Veritor system assays for rapid detection of Flu A+B.
