Safety Bunsen Burners Are Independent of Gas Supply

By LabMedica International staff writers

Safety Bunsen burners are independent of any gas distribution system and permanent mains supply. More...
Each burner is equipped with a rechargeable battery and an adapter for gas cartridges.

The Bunsen burners were developed to ensure high safety by eliminating the risk of gas leaking and explosion inherent in using alcohol burners, gas cookers, and traditional Bunsen burners. With this new generation of Safety Bunsen Burner, the gas ignition is both immediate and safe as no lighter or matches are needed. Unlike traditional burners, the gas supply flows only if a gas flame is detected by the flame monitor.

Flame sterilization is a routine task carried out in many microbiological, clinical, and life science laboratories.

A new white paper from Integra Biosciences (Zizers, Switzerland) describes the security features of modern safety Bunsen burners in relation to the inherent dangers of flame sterilization using a traditional Bunsen burner connected to a gas distribution system.

Operating from a wide range of gas cartridges, the battery powered Safety Bunsen Burner was developed for use anywhere, eliminating the need for connection to an installed gas distribution system. With no interfering cables or tubes, the "hands-free” DVGW certified Fireboy Safety Bunsen Burner is intrinsically safe and extremely easy-to-use.

A major source of danger of traditional Bunsen burners is posed by leaking systems, causing highly flammable gas to escape. Furthermore, accidents are caused by unattended burners and the fact that the hot blue flame is often barely visible.
