A long-term alliance to deliver and support advanced newborn screening solutions has been announced by Waters Corp. More...
(Milford, MA, USA) and PerkinElmer, Inc. (Wellesley, MA, USA).

These solutions combine the mass spectrometry (MS), liquid chromatography (LC) instrumentation, and control software of Waters with the proprietary chemistries, methodologies, and laboratory information-management software of PerkinElmer. Under the terms of the agreement, PerkinElmer will become the exclusive distributor of Waters' Quattro micro and Quattor Premier tandem quadruple mass spectrometers as well as the Alliance HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) system for neonatal screening applications. PerkinElmer will market the co-branded products to clinical laboratories and also supply them with consumables, such as standards, controls, and reagents, offering an all-in-one solution for newborn screening.

Newborn screening for metabolic disorders is a widely accepted procedure in preventive pediatric medicine. From a single blood sample, disease markers for as many as 40 metabolic diseases can be detected. Early detection prevents neurologic damage and saves lives. Waters and PerkinElmer as collaborating on the installation and support of a tandem mass spectrometry-based platform for California (USA) as part of an expanded newborn screening program.

"We are pleased to collaborate with Waters on their mass spectrometry technologies in our integrated solutions for newborn screening,” said Peter B. Coggins, Ph.D., president of PerkinElmer Life & Analytical Sciences. "Through this agreement, our mutual goal is to ensure a pipeline of advanced and integrated products that protect the health of newborns.”
