Image: Genome editing uses engineered nucleases in conjunction with endogenous repair mechanisms to alter the DNA in a cell. The CRISPR-Cas system takes advantage of a short guide RNA to target the bacterial Cas9 endonuclease to specific genomic loci. Because the specificity is supplied by the guide RNA, changing the target only requires a change in the design of the sequence encoding the guide RNA (Photo courtesy of Thermo Fisher Scientific).

Synthetic RNA Improves the CRISPR/Cas 9 Genome Editing Tool

By replacing natural CRISPR guide RNA with a selectively synthesized version, molecular biologists have developed a modified gene editing technique that gives researchers more precise control in correcting and inactivating genes.  More...

First High-Throughput Imaging Platform for Predicting Kidney Toxicity of Chemicals

Researchers have developed a high-throughput platform of automated cellular imaging that efficiently and accurately predicts renal toxicity of chemical compounds without animal testing, providing an improved approach to development of safer medicines and other chemical products.  More...

Protein Identified That Boosts Brain Tumor Resistance to Chemotherapy

Cancer researchers have linked development of resistance to the anticancer drug temozolomide by glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer cells to the activity of the RhoG-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor protein SGEF.  More...

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Flourish in Novel 3D Culture System

Stem cell researchers have developed a three-dimensional gel-based culture system that optimizes production of induced pluripotent stem cells.  More...

Image: Cross-section of a mouse femur. The white and purple cells are bone marrow, the pink area is bone, and the arrows show osteoclasts resorbing bone. This mouse has too many osteoclasts; it has a variant of the NOTCH2 gene that causes a disease akin to Hajdu-Cheney syndrome in humans (Photo courtesy of Stefano Zanotti/Canalis Laboratory, University of Connecticut).

Genetically Engineered Mouse Model Mimics Rare Human Bone Disorder

A model for the study of the rare bone disorder Hajdu-Cheney syndrome was developed by genetically engineering a line of mice to express a specific Notch2 mutation.  More...

Exosome Delivery Dramatically Boosts Anticancer Drug Potency

The use of exosome nanoparticles to transport the anticancer drug paclitaxel was shown to dramatically reduce the amount of drug required to kill lung cancer cells in culture and in a mouse model.  More...

Image: Pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (red) are rare cells found in clusters along the mammalian airway, where they act as sensors, sending information to the central nervous system. These clusters are found interspersed among other airway epithelial cells (green) (Photo courtesy of Dr. Leah Nantie, University of Wisconsin).

Pulmonary Neuroendocrine Cells Function as Airway Sensors to Control Immune Response in the Lung

Researchers have found that pulmonary neuroendocrine cells sense environmental stimuli and transmit this information to the nervous system, which orchestrates an immune response in the lung.  More...
