Orally Administered Endoscopy Capsule Detects Occult Blood in the Stomach

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 19 Dec 2013
Chinese researchers have developed a capsule-based, orally administered endoscopy system capable of detecting traces of occult blood in the stomach and transmitting the data to an external receiver.

Investigators at Chongqing University (China) produced the capsule from a nontoxic and acid-safe polycarbonate. More...
The interior of the capsule contains a detecting sensor, a power supply, and a wireless transmitter.

In vitro experiments discussed in a paper published in the December 2013 issue of the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology showed that the device had a detection limit of six micrograms per liter of fluid and that its use was simple and reliable.

The patent-pending device will now be assessed for clinical safety and then taken for studies in patients.
