Noninvasive Earwax Test Aims to Detect Meniere’s Disease

By LabMedica International staff writers

Meniere’s disease is a chronic inner ear disorder that can cause vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. More...

Diagnosis can be difficult because symptoms overlap with other vestibular and auditory conditions. Current approaches rely heavily on clinical evaluation, patient history, and subjective symptom reporting, which may contribute to delayed or incorrect diagnosis. Researchers now describe an earwax-based method designed to support more objective detection.

The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (SUNY) has presented a technology for Meniere’s disease diagnosis from fatty acid levels in earwax. The approach uses mass spectrometry to analyze a small earwax sample from a patient. It is designed to identify biochemical markers associated with Meniere’s disease and compare measured molecular compounds with established disease-indicative profiles.

The method uses cerumen, or earwax, as a readily accessible biological sample for disease detection. By applying mass spectrometry, the system measures molecular compounds at a detailed chemical level. The goal is to detect subtle biochemical changes associated with Meniere’s disease, reducing reliance on symptom reporting, audiometric tests, and imaging methods that may be time-consuming or inconclusive.

The technology is described as a non-invasive, rapid, and potentially cost-effective approach for screening and diagnosis. It may also offer a way to monitor disease progression and response to treatment, according to the source description. Potential applications include early Meniere’s disease diagnosis, monitoring of disease progression, and screening of at-risk patient populations.

Current diagnostic approaches for Meniere’s disease lack widely accepted, non-invasive biomarker-based tests that can definitively confirm disease presence. The earwax mass spectrometry approach is positioned to address that gap by using an underutilized sample type for molecular-level assessment. The technology is patent pending and listed at technology readiness level 4.
