ADLM Launches First-of-Its-Kind Data Science Program for Laboratory Medicine Professionals

Posted on 02 Feb 2026

Clinical laboratories generate billions of test results each year, creating a treasure trove of data with the potential to support more personalized testing, improve operational efficiency, and enhance patient care. More...

However, many laboratory teams lack the structured training needed to translate these data into actionable insights. Until now, no program had offered a comprehensive overview of how data science can be applied in the clinical laboratory. To address this gap, the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) has launched its Data Science in Laboratory Medicine Certificate Program.

ADLM’s Data Science in Laboratory Medicine Certificate Program is designed to help clinical laboratory professionals and pathologists use healthcare data to solve challenging patient problems. Through curated real-world examples, participants learn core data science concepts and practical tools to improve testing algorithms, reduce errors, enhance laboratory operation efficiency, and collaborate more effectively with local data analysts.

Developed by a team of ADLM’s data science experts, the program provides a foundational overview of key data analytics approaches and how they are applied in laboratory medicine and pathology to strengthen professional expertise and clinical impact. The program covers best practices related to data science, ranging from healthcare data security to mitigation of lab data problems, in addition to the use of machine learning in laboratory workflows.

"We are thrilled to launch this new certificate program for laboratory medicine professionals and pathologists who want to stay ahead of the emerging developments in data science," said ADLM President Dr. Paul J. Jannetto. "Our members saw the need for a professional program that would not only address foundational data science education, but that would also raise awareness of the value of data analytics in laboratory medicine. Healthcare professionals who complete this program will be uniquely distinguished in a field increasingly driven by data and analytics."
