Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (Waltham, MA, USA) showcased innovations for research and clinical labs and also launched a new series of compact refrigerators at the 2018 American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo held July 29 – August 2 in Chicago, USA.

At AACC 2018, Thermo Fisher displayed its range of LC-MS instruments, including the fully automated Cascadion SM Clinical Analyzer, Prelude LX-4 MD HPLC, and Endura MD Mass Spectrometer. Thermo Fisher’s lab solutions portfolio showcased at this year’s AACC included the recently CE-marked Phadia 200 instrument which requires less than six square feet of lab space and can run up to 700 different ImmunoCAP and EliA quantitative tests, including the recently cleared peanut allergen component ImmunoCAP Ara h6. Thermo Fisher also showcased its new B·R·A·H·M·S KRYPTOR GOLD immunoassay analyzer, which features increased capacity and has been developed for optimal automation, efficiency and precision.

Thermo Fisher showcased its Ion Torrent Oncomine solutions, including the Oncomine Dx Target Test, the first FDA-approved companion diagnostic for non-small cell lung cancer. The company also demonstrated its Ion GeneStudio S5 Prime system, as well as other oncology research assays designed for studies in blood-based cancers, liquid biopsy, childhood cancers and immuno-oncology. In addition, Thermo Fisher featured new compounds for antimicrobial susceptibility testing: delafloxacin and meropenem/vaborbactam. Also on display at the event were the recently announced Thermo Scientific B·R·A·H·M·S PCT direct point-of-care assay for procalcitonin (PCT) measurement in acute care settings and its novel range of ChromaCare flush solutions and ultrapure solvents for ultrahigh-performance LC-MS systems.

"Clinical customers and translational researchers demand analytical platforms that support higher throughput, accuracy and scalability," said Patrick Durbin, senior vice president and president of specialty diagnostics for Thermo Fisher Scientific. "The common goal is actionable data that's delivered with confidence, and we're highlighting our portfolio of leading products at AACC to support their needs, from research to the clinic."

At this year’s AACC, Thermo Fisher launched the new series of TSG compact refrigerators for clinical laboratories and patient care facilities requiring secure and energy-efficient storage of vaccines, medicines, lab kits and breast milk, all in a quiet unit with a small footprint. The new refrigerators have been designed to provide uninterrupted temperature stability and cleanroom-compatible readiness for reliable materials storage. They operate at a sound level of less than 35 dbA and have ENERGY STAR-rated performance, consuming significantly less energy than similar models to meet increasing demands for sustainability and reduced operating costs.

"Maintaining optimal cold storage conditions is of utmost importance in clinical settings to preserve the viability of stored materials, as is the need to maximize efficiencies by locating vaccines, medicines and lab kits close to their point of use," said Alex Esmon, senior product manager, cold storage, laboratory equipment, Thermo Fisher Scientific. "With this in mind, we have introduced the new series of high-performing refrigerators to offer our clinical customers confidence that their valuable materials are fully protected at all times. The solid state technology used in the TSG Series allows for minimal impact on the clinical environment through reduced operational noise and heat output, while the systems' small size maximizes working space."
