Near Pain-Free Blood Collection Technology Enables High-Quality Testing

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 02 Sep 2022

Blood tests help doctors diagnose diseases and conditions such as cancer, diabetes, anemia, and coronary heart disease, as well as evaluate organ functionality. More...

They can also be used to identify disease risk factors and assess the efficacy of prescribed medicine. Blood draw and analysis are keystone components of modern healthcare, informing physicians about many diverse aspects of a patient’s health. In the past, most blood tests were conducted via venipuncture: the process of drawing blood using a traditional syringe and needle. Today, however, there are several viable ways to draw blood, such as finger stick. Now, a new blood collection single-use system revolutionizes the collection, stabilization, and transport of whole blood samples.

The OneDraw Blood Collection Device by Drawbridge Health, Inc. (Menlo Park, CA, USA) is a small, lightweight device that incorporates two miniature lancets to make an incision in the skin and then a built-in vacuum draws blood to the skin's surface. The blood is deposited onto a dried stabilization matrix within a removable cartridge. The convenient, contamination-free cartridge is then inserted into a transport sleeve that encloses and protects the sample during shipping to a clinical laboratory. This automated system enables a standardized blood sample collection with minimal instruction, and samples can be stored at room temperature for up to 28 days through proprietary cold-chain-free storage technology. OneDraw uniquely facilitates remote sample collection anytime and anywhere in a convenient, comfortable way.

OneDraw sweeps away obstacles to getting blood drawn - like pain, discomfort, multiple visits and wait times - that until now were accepted as unavoidable. By streamlining the blood draw process for patients and healthcare providers, OneDraw makes health care more comfortable and efficient. It’s the first step toward a world in which the health information within our bodies is rapidly and easily accessible. The OneDraw process is convenient and effortless, for the provider as well as the patient.

OneDraw has received FDA clearance for the collection of capillary blood for quantitative measurement of HbA1c and has also been certified in Japan as a medical device, having been cleared by the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA). In addition to the recent PMDA approval, OneDraw is already approved by the FDA as a Class II medical device, and it has a European Conformity mark for supervised use by health-care professionals to collect blood samples to measure HbA1c for monitoring the long-term control of blood sugar (glucose) in diabetic individuals.
