Cepheid Unveils Third-Generation GeneXpert System at ADLM 2026

Cepheid  is unveiling the third generation of its GeneXpert molecular diagnostic system at the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting. More...

The company is presenting the new platform during a special event on Tuesday, July 28, highlighting its expanded capabilities for PCR-based testing.

The third-generation GeneXpert system is designed to broaden the range of molecular testing available on a single platform while retaining the simplicity, flexibility, and reliability of existing GeneXpert workflows. According to the company, the system supports laboratories seeking to consolidate different types of molecular testing that may otherwise require multiple instruments and processes.

At launch, the platform is designed to support Cepheid’s comprehensive menu of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared Xpert tests. It introduces a fully integrated touchscreen interface, redesigned software, and a more intuitive user experience while maintaining the workflows currently used by GeneXpert customers.

The system is also being developed to support a new generation of Xpert tests and applications. Planned capabilities include high-plex panel testing, faster time to results, and additional sample-to-answer solutions that could extend to next-generation sequencing workflows.

Like the company’s existing GeneXpert systems, the new platform provides random-access testing, allowing laboratories to process samples as they arrive rather than waiting to assemble batches. This approach enables urgent samples to be prioritized while supporting rapid access to actionable results across different healthcare environments.

The first configuration scheduled for release is a compact four-module system, with shipments to U.S. customers expected to begin in the coming months. Cepheid is also developing higher-capacity GeneXpert configurations and new GeneXpert Infinity systems for laboratories with larger testing volumes. The systems remain in development and have not been reviewed by a regulatory authority for diagnostic use.

Cepheid’s unveiling forms part of Danaher’s broader presence at ADLM 2026. At booth 3237, visitors can explore technologies from Danaher operating companies including Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, HemoCue, Leica Biosystems, Radiometer, and SCIEX, covering diagnostic and life sciences workflows from discovery through clinical delivery.
