Mayo Clinic and Thermo Fisher Launch Multi-Omics Venture to Identify Early Disease Signals

Many diseases begin developing years before symptoms emerge, making early detection difficult for healthcare systems and clinical laboratories. More...

Linking molecular changes with longitudinal health data could reveal earlier signs of disease and support more personalized approaches to care. Researchers have now launched a large-scale multi-omics initiative designed to map the biological transitions from health to disease.

Mayo Clinic, with Thermo Fisher Scientific, has launched Precure, LLC to help the life sciences community better understand early biological changes that precede diagnosis. The company plans to build one of the world’s leading biomedical datasets through one of the largest human multi-omics data-generation efforts. Mayo Clinic will be the majority owner, with Thermo Fisher as minority owner.

Precure, LLC will integrate proteomic, genomic and longitudinal clinical information to help identify early biological signals across diseases, including cancer, cardiometabolic conditions, neurological disorders and immune-mediated disease. Molecular data from one million biospecimens will be linked to clinical information collected over several years in a highly standardized setting. Artificial intelligence (AI) and large-scale data analytics will be used to detect patterns within these complex datasets and translate them into actionable insights.

The partners will contribute complementary capabilities to generate and interpret the data at scale. Mayo Clinic brings clinical and research leadership, advanced AI and data science, extensive biospecimens and longitudinal de-identified clinical data to accelerate discovery and translation. Thermo Fisher contributes proteomics expertise and technologies, including the Olink Explore HT platform and Thermo Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometry, along with kits and reagents, to help build the multi-omics ecosystem.

According to Mayo Clinic, Precure, LLC complements Precure Research, its investigator-led effort focused on understanding early disease signals during the transition from health to disease. Under this approach, Precure, LLC provides the infrastructure, population-scale molecular data generation and external collaborations needed to support discovery and translation into diagnostics and therapeutics. Mayo Clinic also states that any financial returns from its involvement will be reinvested to advance its nonprofit mission in patient care, research and education.

“At Mayo Clinic, we are committed to transforming patient care through innovation. By harnessing the full potential of multi-omics data, Precure, LLC aims to help us better understand disease before symptoms appear, accelerating discoveries that can lead to earlier diagnoses, more targeted treatments and better outcomes for patients,” said Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president and CEO, Mayo Clinic.

“Precure LLC has the potential to create a step change in how we generate and apply multi-omics data to improve human health. By combining Thermo Fisher's leadership in scientific technology with Mayo Clinic's leadership in clinical care, research and innovation, we can create new opportunities at unprecedented scale to detect disease earlier, accelerate drug development and enable more precise therapies,” said Marc Casper, Chairman and CEO, Thermo Fisher Scientific.
