血液培养物能帮助医生确定患者是否有严重且可能致命的血液感染,如脓毒症。抽出来的这些血也许会被病人的皮屑污染,因为皮屑里含细菌,采血的过程中皮屑会进入采血针。

研究显示,传统技术可能产生假阳性,进而使患者经受更多次抽血,住院时间延长,更易感染医院获得性病症,还可能接受不必要的抗生素治疗。美国南卡罗莱纳州查尔斯顿市南卡罗莱纳医科大学(MUSC)的科学家使用了名为SteriPath的机械式初始样本转移设备(ISDD),它由华盛顿州西雅图市的Magnolia医疗技术公司出品,是一套封闭式无菌血液培养物收集系统,用于转移、隔离和分离最开始的1.5-2毫升血液,众所周知抽血时的这部分血液含有杂质。

研究还显示,使用机械式ISDD可能降低成本,还可提高用工效率。研究人员表示,据保守估计培养物被污染一次的耗费是4,850美元,如果研究过程中每次抽血都用ISDD,MUSC将省下74万4955美元。病理学与化验学教授Lisa Steed博士说:“开展这项研究并看到如此强烈的结果是莫大的好事,当临床医师合力解决这些问题时患者将受益无穷。血液培养物及其准确性对于确保在正确的时机按正确的过程接受正确的护理至关重要。”

该研究的论文在2017年12月11日于美国佛罗里达州奥兰多市举行的医疗促进学会全国论坛上做了宣读。MUSC医疗质量总监Danielle Scheurer大夫说:“我们看到,使用这台设备再辅以培训后,急诊科的血液培养物污染事件大幅减少。我们通过降低污染几率,提高了诊断准确率,只治疗真正感染的患者。这进而减少了抗生素的使用,让我们能够缓解当前的全国性问题——过度或不当使用抗生素导致抗生素耐药。”
