In a move to expand its laboratory products portfolio, Thermo Electron (Waltham, MA, USA) has agreed to acquire Kendro Laboratory Products (Asheville, NC, USA), a division of SPX Corp. More...
(Charlotte, NC, USA) for U.S.$833.5 million in cash.

Kendro makes and markets a wide range of laboratory equipment for sample preparation, processing, and storage and is used in clinical laboratories as well as the life sciences and drug-discovery laboratories. The company's thermal equipment offerings include ovens, incubators, and freezers marketed under the brands Revco and Jewett. Centrifuge offerings cover applications ranging from DNA separation to whole-cell separation and are marketed under the brands Sorvall and Heraeus. A global network of technicians provides integrated validation and other services. The company's 2004 sales are estimated at $375 million.

"Like Thermo, Kendro enjoys a rich history and culture of innovation based on addressing the unique and changing needs of customers,” remarked Marijn E. Dekkers, president and CEO of Thermo Electron. "The combined company allows us to deliver even greater value to our customers by creating a broader offering of laboratory and sample preparation technologies, as well as enhanced laboratory service capabilities.”

Thermo Electron's Life and Laboratory Sciences segment provides analytical instruments, scientific equipment, services, and software solutions for clinical, life science, drug-discovery, and environmental laboratories.
