(Waltham, MA, USA) has agreed to acquire Jouan SA (Saint-Herblain, France) for US$124 million in cash plus the assumption of about $8 million of debt.

Jouan is a global supplier of products used by clinical laboratories and researchers in the life sciences to prepare and preserve laboratory samples. The company's offerings include centrifuges, biologic safety cabinets, ultra-low temperature freezers, and incubators. Many of its product incorporate robotics. The company's products are sold under the brand names of Precision, NAPCO, Heto, Holten, and ALC, in addition to its own brand name. Jouan has manufacturing operations in France, Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic, and the United States.

"Jouan is a great example of a strategic acquisition that builds on Thermo's strengths, in this case by broadening our sample preparation and storage product lines, sales channels, and geographic market coverage,” noted Marijn E. Dekkers, president and CEO of Thermo Electron. "For our customers, this means we will be better equipped to provide a full range of laboratory solutions, all from one source.”

Thermo Electron is a leading global supplier of high-tech instruments used in clinical, life science, and industrial laboratories. The company has annual revenues in excess of $2 billion.
