Wireless Adapter Automates Tedious Pipetting Tasks

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 22 Jan 2014
An innovative device that automates most pipetting activities improves accuracy and productivity while reducing hands-on time and risk of repetitive stress injury.

The Integra Biosciences (Zizers, Switzerland) VIAFLO ASSIST was designed for use with any of the VIAFLO II line of multichannel pipettes (8-, 12-, and 16-channels). More...

The VIAFLO ASSIST module communicates with the pipette via wireless Bluetooth technology and controls the actions of the pipette. The module's full color screen and touch wheel interface offer quick and comprehensible menu navigation, which enables precision pipetting throughout the volume range of 0.5 to 1,250 microliters in 6-well to 384-well standard or deep-well plates in landscape or portrait format.

One of the many applications simplified by VIAFLO ASSIST is performance of serial dilutions, which can be tedious due to the many mixing steps that are required. The new system carries out serial dilution protocols automatically. The user defines the number of mixing cycles, speed, and mix volume. The system can work in either landscape or portrait orientation. The concentrated sample can be drawn from a reagent reservoir or from the plate itself (e.g., first column). In addition, the sample can also be aspirated with the pipette from an external source before placing it on the VIAFLO ASSIST and starting the protocol.

The VIAFLO ASSIST reduces the need for traditional handheld pipetting to a minimum, relieving lab personnel from activities that may cause repetitive stress injuries.
