Personal PCR Analyzer Aims to Enable At-Home Infectious Disease Testing

PCR amplifies DNA to enable highly accurate testing, but its reliance on complex, expensive laboratory analyzers has traditionally kept many workflows in centralized settings. More...

A new personal DNA analyzer aims to extend PCR testing to the home through a compact platform that combines disposable cartridges with automated analysis.

Sparrow Bio’s first USD 100 personal DNA analyzer is a four-inch-tall device roughly the size of a coffee cup. Within this compact format, it integrates DNA collection, extraction, thermal cycling, real-time optical detection, and automated analysis into a single system. Testing uses disposable cartridges, with results displayed on a built-in screen. Depending on the test performed, the complete workflow from sample collection to result takes 30–60 minutes.

The platform relies on PCR, a DNA amplification chemistry that enables highly accurate testing. To make this technology more affordable, Sparrow Bio reported using new technologies that reduce manufacturing costs by up to 50 times compared with existing laboratory-based PCR instruments. The company estimates analyzer manufacturing costs at USD 135 for production volumes of 1,000 units, falling below USD 100 at higher volumes. Similarly, estimated cartridge costs are USD 7 at volumes of 10,000 units and less than USD 2 at higher volumes.

Sparrow Bio is seeking strategic partners to fund the development and regulatory clearance of testing products for its platform. Potential applications include infectious disease testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, influenza, strep throat, and tuberculosis, alongside testing for genetic risks, cancer, and pathogens in food and water.

The team’s previous products include the Spartan RX CYP2C19 System, which received two U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearances, and the Kenota 1 point-of-care allergy testing platform, which received FDA 510(k) clearance and a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waiver. The Sparrow analyzer is currently for research use only and is not for use in diagnostic procedures.

“Just like mainframe computers gave way to smartphones, DNA testing will move out of the lab and into the home,” said Paul Lem, M.D., CEO of Sparrow Bio. “Our vision is you will be able to test yourself for infectious diseases. If you test positive, you will have a video call with your doctor, receive an electronic prescription, and get medication delivered to your door.”
