Self-Contained Automated Digital Microscope

A new self-contained instrument that combines a microscope with a digital camera and network functions in one tower unit requires no set-up, no eyepiece, and no training.

The user inserts a specimen slide into the front of the unit, which automatically loads the slide and selects the appropriate settings for optimum bright-field viewing. More...
Highly intuitive software allows the user to observe the entire slide, to magnify and mark specific parts of the specimen, and to digitally capture, store, and share images--all at the touch of a mouse. The entire image of a specimen and the enlargement of a portion are displayed on a single screen together. The enlargement is indicated with crosshairs on the macro image, a feature not available on existing microscopes.

The microscope, developed by Nikon (Tokyo, Japan), is lightweight and portable, offers remote control access and use, and features high resolution that makes it well-suited for broadband use. The company suggests that Coolscope will enhance the efficiency and productivity of medical researchers and laboratorians by giving them the ability to overcome physical barriers with easier communication in less time.
