Microsphere-Based Array for DNA Experiments

By Biotechdaily staff writers
Posted on 24 Jan 2003
New array microspheres used with multiplexing technology are intended to simplify the genotyping assay development process and increase assay flexibility.

These Universal Array microspheres, developed by Tm Bioscience Corp. More...
(Toronto, Canada), are for use on the xMap platform of Luminex Corp. (Austin, TX, USA). In contrast to planar DNA microarray platforms, the Universal Array provides a reproducible, high-throughput and cost-effective means of nucleic acid testing, says Tm Bioscience. No lengthy assay optimization is needed for each new test developed.

Each Universal Array microsphere set carries a unique DNA sequence, thereby providing standardized, stock microspheres. These sequences are rare in any of the currently known genomes, so that the capture conditions are independent of the genetic content being studied. The sequences are intended for multiplexed assays, are optimized for minimum cross-reactivity, and are designed to be an isothermal set. The microspheres may be used in end-user-identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or in predefined kits developed by other Luminex partners.

"The extraordinary accuracy and performance of Tm's Universal Array technology is complemented by the flexibility and cost effectiveness of the Lumenix xMap platform,” said Greg Hines, president of Tm Bioscience.
