Modern Fume Hoods Do More Than Clear the Air

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 15 Mar 2010
Removal of hazardous fumes from the laboratory while protecting both the staff and the environment is of tremendous importance to any biotech or biomed research, development, or manufacturing facility. More...
With this in mind, Thermo Scientific Hamilton (Waltham, MA, USA) has now introduced two new lines of fume hoods, the Advantage and the Infinity.

The Advantage fume hoods feature enhanced ergonomics for user comfort and Directed Air Technology for improved performance. A full-height slanted front viewing area and side viewing panels enable simple and easy monitoring of samples. With low voltage light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, minimal exhaust static pressure, and variable air volume (VAV) compatibility to minimize exhaust air when the sash is down, the Advantage fume hoods provide energy-efficient hazard containment.

A flush sill enhances safety by eliminating possible glassware tripping hazards, while Hamilton AutoSash technology maximizes laboratory safety by ensuring correct sash positioning. An additional trough is positioned at the front of the unit to catch any spills, and active sidewall airflow enhances containment in adverse conditions.

In addition to the advanced technologies incorporated into the Advantage fume hoods, the Infinity line has been designed to maintain user safety in an environmentally friendly fashion that can generate energy savings. The GreenFumeHood filter technology eliminates atmospheric pollution from the exhaust, reduces building infrastructure, and dramatically reduces energy consumption costs. This technology utilizes Neutrodine filters in place of traditional carbon filters to eliminate emissions.

A spokesperson for Thermo Fisher stated, "The Infinity and Advantage fume hoods are extremely ergonomic, with highly advanced safety and energy-saving features making them ideal for virtually any laboratory.”
