New Digital Microscopy System

A new digital microscopy system offers creation of virtual images at diagnostic-level resolution for the entire slide, which can be accessed from any location around the world via the Internet.

This means an overview of the entire slide with detailed views at high resolution is not possible. The new system, called .slide, eliminates these restrictions. Entire slides can now be scanned, including the microscopic specimen at a level of magnification defined by the user. A virtual slide is thereby created that can be displayed on a monitor in perfect quality and archived in an online database, if necessary.

Just as when using a glass slide, sections can be enlarged or reduced, by anyone with authorized access at any location in the world. Points of particular interest can be marked for direct recall.

.slide is based on an entire system of individual components that interact in an optimum fashion. The software is the core of the system, and it regulates the acquisition procedure, enables numerous processing routines, and ensures flawless visualization and allocation of images to web-based galleries.

The system was developed by Soft Imaging System, a subsidiary of Olympus-Europa (Hamburg, Germany), in conjunction with Olympus. .slide is used with an Olympus BX51 microscope, known for excellent optical performance and resolution. An integrated digital color camera offers high resolution, rapid frame rates, and an exceptional signal-to-noise ratio.
