Human Cell Lines for Use in Research

By Biotechdaily staff writers
Posted on 06 Nov 2003
Three human cells lines, derived from either the pituitary or pancreas gland, provide novel cells that can be used in basic research in diabetes, pancreatic cancer, and endocrinology of the pituitary gland.

Two of the cell lines are immortalized lines that were generated by the patented technology of Vitro Diagnostics, Inc., (Aurora, CO, USA), which launched the cell lines. More...
This technology is based on the expression of certain immortalizing genes. Another human pancreatic cell line is nonimmortalized and may be used to compare with a similar immortalized line to determine specific properties unique to the latter. The cell lines are extensively tested to ensure sterility and the absence of common cell contaminants such as viruses, fungi, and mycoplasma. The line of cells is called Vitrocell.

In addition to basic research, Vitro Diagnostics believes the lines may be used in the production of biotherapeutic products such as humanized antibodies, recombinant human proteins, and vaccines. The company also offers a series of complementary products and procedures to ensure the successful establishment and growth of these cells, such as cell culture media and specific reagents needed for long-timer survival and cryopreservation.

"Together with our strong technical support, we anticipate that our customers will be able to investigate the use of these cells in a variety of novel applications, including the production of biotherapeutic agents,” said Dr. Jim Musick, president and CEO of Vitro Diagnostics.
