Copan Expands US Manufacturing Operations with Multimillion Dollar Investment

Copan Diagnostics, Inc. More...
(Murrieta, CA, USA) is undertaking a new multimillion US dollar investment project to bring plastic transfer pipette and additional medical device manufacturing operations to its California, USA facility.

Plastic transfer pipettes are essential products widely used by hospital and other laboratories for transferring liquids and clinical samples during diagnostics testing or analytical research. As many as 500 million pipettes are used in the United States annually. Copan developed a customized blow molding equipment that maximizes productivity through a fully automated system for separating the molded product from waste material, which is then 100% recycled.

A 1208 m2 building adjacent to its current facility was purchased by Copan to house new plastic blow molding equipment that is used to manufacture transfer pipettes. The new building allows the transfer of some activities from its current location, thus allowing more space for Copan to expand medical device manufacturing operations for the company's microbiology specimen collection and transport line.

The project is an integral part of Copan's plan to support future demand. Norman Sharples, executive vice president at Copan Diagnostics, said, "in today's market, companies must examine opportunities to bring further efficiencies to their operations to remain competitive, which is what we are doing with this endeavor."

Copan Diagnostics manufactures collection and transport systems and offers a complete range of microbial sampling products for traditional culture analysis and molecular diagnostic assays. The company also produces flocked swabs, universal transport medium, the ESwab and other laboratory consumables. The Walk-Away Specimen Processor (WASP), a system for automatic planting and streaking of microbiology samples, is another Copan product.
