LAMP Assay Validated for MRSA in Invasive Samples

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of bone and joint infections and one of the most common causative pathogens of bacterial pneumonia in children. An increased risk of mortality from invasive staphylococcal infections has been attributed to methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). More...

New Test Accurately Detects Latent HIV

The ability of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to lie dormant in a "reservoir" of CD4 cells has been the main obstacle to finding a cure; once a patient starts antiretroviral therapy, it becomes very important to measure the level of viremia, and whether the virus can replicate. More...

Multiplex Immunoassay Diagnoses Toxoplasmosis and Rubella

Primary infections of Toxoplasma and rubella in pregnant women may result in vertical transmission of the pathogens, which can cause congenital disease that significantly affects fetal development. More...

A new conducting polymer was developed for detecting specific interaction of trisaccharide with hemagglutinin in the envelope of the human influenza A virus (H1N1) by electrical manners (Photo courtesy of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University).

Biosensor Technology Enables Rapid Detection of Flu Virus

A research team has developed a voltage-sensor for early detection of influenza virus A (H1N1) that is almost 100 times more sensitive than conventional tests, and can distinguish between human and avian strains. More...

Antimalarial Compound Improves Forensics of Bloodstains

Forensic investigators often use a luminol chemiluminescence test to detect latent bloodstains at crime scenes. Now, researchers have found that combining luminol with the antimalarial drug artemisinin, a natural peroxide, reduces the risk of false positives compared to the traditional method that mainly uses hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate as coreactants. They also obtained test results using a smartphone, which could provide highly accurate on-scene analyses. More...

Intestinal Fungi Contribute to Alcoholic Liver Disease

Chronic liver disease with cirrhosis is the 12th leading cause of death in the USA, and alcoholic liver disease accounts for approximately half of all cirrhosis deaths. Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with intestinal bacterial dysbiosis, yet little is known about the contribution of intestinal fungi, or mycobiota, to alcoholic liver disease. More...

Combination of Antibiotics Can Eradicate Super Pathogens

ESKAPE pathogens are a group of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria that pose a grave threat, causing more than two million infections and nearly 23,000 deaths a year. The six super bacteria are also responsible for a substantial number of infections in hospitals. More...
