Microplate Blowdown Station Optimizes Sample Prep Productivity

By Labmedica International staff writers
Posted on 13 Jul 2010

Designed to remove solvents from 96 or 384-well plates quickly and safely, a new prep station is a versatile tool proven to optimize microplate sample preparation productivity.

The Ultravap Blowdown Station, developed by Porvair Sciences, Ltd. (Leatherhead, Surrey, UK), achieves high sample throughput through sophisticated evaporator head technology and an innovative manifold design, which directly injects heated nitrogen into each individual well of the microplate simultaneously. The system removes most popular chromatography solvents in just minutes. For heat-sensitive and thermally labile samples, the Ultravap may be operated in a unique two-stage mode combining rapid initial dry-down with carefully controlled final solvent evaporation.

The Ultravap has been designed to be simple to install, operate, and maintain. Installation only requires connection to a gas supply/cylinder and standard mains socket and the user is ready to begin. Safety of operation is ensured as the CE-marked compact unit fits into all fume cupboards.

Typical application areas that will benefit from the Ultravap include drug metabolism, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and bioanalysis laboratories, where chromatography or solid phase extraction is used to help isolate and analyze compounds from biologic matrices. Additionally lead discovery, medicinal chemistry and combinatorial chemistry labs looking to concentrate target compound samples, prior to reconstitution in another solvent, can also enhance productivity using the Ultravap.

To enable use by all laboratory staff the system includes a stored methods facility. Different drying program can be retained in the memory eliminating the need to set up the system when changing from one method to another.
