An advanced technology erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) analyzer, that delivers results in seconds using small sample, is now available globally.

ALCOR Scientific, Inc. (Smithfield, RI, USA), provider of in vitro diagnostic analyzers and devices for enteral nutrition delivery, has expanded availability of its iSED system for ESR testing to meet growing demand for this advanced technology. Designed, manufactured, and initially launched late 2012 in the USA, the iSED is CE-marked and now available globally, through distributors in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and North America.

iSED provides accurate, efficient, automated ESR testing – one of the most widely used lab tests worldwide, yet historically one of the most time-consuming and cumbersome to perform. It transforms ESR testing by employing patented technology that delivers accurate results in 20 seconds using a blood sample of just 100 µL, especially important in working with pediatric and geriatric patients. The iSED has a throughput of up to 180 samples per hour, made possible by its random access, continuous feed operation. The system tests samples directly from standard EDTA tubes, reducing both testing costs and contaminated waste. With its closed tube sampling and no disposables required, the iSED greatly speeds processes and improves efficiency, as well as safety for lab clinicians.

The iSED’s high degree of accuracy is enabled by the use of quantitative photometry to measure, in a controlled environment, the formation of the red cell aggregates (Rouleaux) in the most critical phase of the red cell sedimentation. This technology ensures that results obtained, unaffected by variables such as mixing and temperature, accurately reflect the patient’s inflammation status.

“The iSED’s rapid adoption is a testament to its ability to facilitate patient testing through a cost-effective and user-friendly solution that streamlines lab processes,” said Carlo Ruggeri, ALCOR CEO and founder, “Alcor looks forward to introducing new, innovative diagnostic and medical device products driven by the same principles.”

The iSED was recently featured at the American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Annual Meeting and Expo in Chicago (IL, USA), July 29–31, 2014.
